    I don't normally buy a Sunday paper, but certainly bought The Independent yesterday. Blair was certainly planning to scupper Brown's career in 2005. But then the pope died and that caused a rethink.

    I haven't read the article in depth, but I really can't see why the death of the Polish pope should have weakened Blair in the run-up to a General Election. Can anybody throw any light on this?
