I heard somewhere that the class system is actually a fairly modern concept, 19th century I think. "Class" replaced "rank" and was fairer, because it is actually possible to change your class. In the days of "rank" if you weren't (for example) born an aristocrat, there was nothing you could do about it.

In the recent series of Jane Austen dramatisations on ITV, I heard one of the characters making a reference to "rank", so it was definitely still in use in the 19th century.

We got taught a grading system in school of A's B's and C's.
It was dependant on loads of stuff - profession, wages, property owner, assets, etc - very complicated.

If this still exists it'll be very out of date...but like someone else said, it probably wont exist anymore, as we're supposed to be a classless society.

Perhaps we should grade people like we grade meat?

    I think it's:

    Lower Working Class
    Middle Working Class

    Lower Middle Class
    Upper Working Class
    Middle Middle Class

    Lower Upper Class
    Upper Middle Class

    Middle Upper Class

    Upper Upper Class

    Any clearer?

In this country we operate a classless system, haven't you heard?

Class is a load of BS, look into british history around the time of the first great plague and you can see (due to opportunity from deaths) yesterdays peasant was tomorrows lord of the manor. The ability to Mimic behaviour, that's all class is.

in my book, doesn't matter if you earn 200k per year or 20k per year, you're still poor, the rich are really rich

    Milan.
class has nothing to do with being rich.

Many of the upper class are poor, and many of the rich are lower class.
