I am currently on a gig in Skemersdale, its an 75min each way from Glossop. Which is OK I guess, though about the longest I have done. My last few contracts have been on this side anyway.

True about Glossop and traffic, the jam's are pretty much non-stop now. But the views are nice once you get there!

About 10 mins from Skem, junction of the M58/M6. I hadn't lived Up Nth for 15 years and was surprised how many Co's have moved their IT from the South East to beautiful industrial unit locations on the M6/M62/M58. Trouble is the traffic is a nightmare now ! When they stop building 'luxury' apartments things might improve, half the traffic at 7am are builders on their way to Manc and L'pool.

Has to be Glossop or Holmefirth, midway between Manchester, Leeds and Shefield.

Lots of northern contracts in commuting distance, good quality of life, reasonable cost-of-living.

Not bad about 10 years ago but Glossop is a traffic disaster zone to compete with the best of them !?

I live in the SE of England. My commutes so far have been:
via Heathrow
via London City
via Gatwick
via Luton
via Birmingham International.

I don't see what would be lost by commuting
via Glasgow
via Edinburgh
via Prestwick
or even
via Aberdeen or
via Inverness.

except the 1 1/2 hour (plus) journey segments to the airports. Most of Scotland is within 90 minutes of an airport, so I could live anywhere.

Reading is in the M4 / Thames corridor, and in easy reach of London and Heathrow. It is also has good rail links to the South, the West, the West Midlands, and the North West.

There's also a lot of nice places to live around Reading.

But not Reading.

The problem is not so bad if you live near the western M25 because there don't seem to be that many jobs that require you to go the other way, to the east of London.

I know what you mean but if you want to work in the City or Canary Wharf long term you are better off living to the East and on a line that goes into either Liverpool St. or Fenchurch St and walk from there.
Then you don't need to piss about with long tube journeys, which are a nightmare, especially in the summer.

I agree getting to the west is then a pain. I never intend working in Slough or Reading, but it puts time on a visit to the west country.
I nearly bought in Sevenoaks in Kent a couple of years ago.
To the south Oxted in Surrey is not a bad little place to live. Still too far from the M4 corridor though. (Oxted and Sevenoaks lines can get you into London Bridge which is also good for the City).

Hopefully Brighton will prove to be a good base. Only 1 hour to London and about the same to Berkshire / M4
