Far more effective however was when I screamed at him to listen to other people for a change (and some choice Anglo-Saxon).

Everybody else was gobsmaked as up till then I'd put up with all kinds of cr*p without complaining once. I left the client with a better reputation than said tw*t!

Working from home today. Got up about ten past nine. Worked for a few hours. Then off to the gym, lunch in the park and now back home. Work for a bit, read the paper then catch the train to London for work tomorrow.

Different world. I hope I never have to go back to office hellhole life.

Depressing workplaces - I've never understood facilities / workspace management. When I'm working in my home office, I make sure of the following for my workspace:

Not too hot
Not too cold
Comfortable seating and environment
As quiet as possible.
Suitable equipment - best spec computers, etc.
Coffee, drinks, etc. nearby

so that I am productive as possible.

Most companies seem to do the exact opposite. Why?

I used to work with a permie at a bank in London, his favourite greeting to contractors was always "die scum",

Just had the week from hell.

Spent a week doing a project for a big firm. I'm a permie consultant but work from home and travel to customers for projects from time to time.

Forgot what it was like for the 9 to 5ers in certain big company offices. Dark, depressing office. Everyone walking about with frowns. Project managers stopping by to have little words. Crap coffee machine. Crap over-priced canteen. Everyone moaning. Everyone going on about how hard they work. Everyone knackered because of the commute - up early, home late. The inane, inane buzz of office small talk.

Loads of contractors. Overheard conversations about school fees, how they couldn't wait for the weekend to get back to their country home.

Chatting with a permie he casually mentioned that normal IT salary for 'guys like us' was 30k but the contractors got double that. Kept my mouth shut and nodded while silently thinking "**** me, I earn more than the contractors here, as a permie with full benefits and holidays, and I don't get all this office tuliphole hell". Poor, poor guys.

No one should put up with this tulip! Burn these crappy offices down! Get some in-demand skills! Work from home! Make them pay you a decent wage by being worth it!

If things had been equal I would have punched his lights out for being a twatty little twerp, I wonder if you are related or possibly he?

Also the clue to this site is in the title "Contractor UK" no where does it mention being a portal for little gob tulipe consultants, so be a good chap and piss off back to aspiring to your 3 Series BMW or whatever it is you have sold your soul for.

What you're witnessessing, my friend, is a classic symptom of poor management - managers who don't lead by example, inspire their teams or support individuals. When this happens, individuals develop a sense of powerlessness and begin to turn their frustrations into an imploding culture of bitching and back biting, poor productivity and no sense of belonging.

Exactly the reason I stopped being a permie. Now, I don't get involved in office politics and I know that if I'm on a site like the one you describe, it's not forever.
