A little further west the Scarsdale Arms in Kensington is a nice place to while away a couple of hours outside. Edwardes Square is a quiet spot and if the terrace is full the staff don't mind if you use the square gardens.

Have to be early to get a table though, but that can be no bad thing

Can anyone recommend any pubs in the centre of london - ideally west end - which are nice to sit outside? Or even have sitting outside facilities...

Not quite West End but loads of cool bars/pubs with outdoor areas along the Thames. The Hornyman near London bridge is cool, does nice food and has a nice wheat beer.
