A lioness is believed to be on the loose in the outskirts of Berlin, police have warned.
Footage shared on Twitter shows what appears to be an escaped big cat roaming on the side of a road at night.
Residents of the Potsdam region, on the fringes of the German capital, have been urged to remain at home.
A statement read: ‘Please avoid leaving the house due to an escaped wild animal in the Kleinmachnow, Teltow and Stahnsdorf (PM) area and also bring your pets into the house. Our colleagues are on site and checking the situation.’
Police later extended the warning to people living in the south of Berlin and an alert was sent on an official warning app that the animal was suspected to be a lioness.
Two men reported seeing a big cat running after a wild boar, the latter common in and around Berlin, police spokesperson Daniel Keip told public broadcaster rbb.
‘The two gentlemen recorded a smartphone video, and even experienced police officers had to confirm that it is probably a lioness,’ he said.
A vet and two hunters are participating in a search for the cat, which also involved helicopters.
Police had no immediate information on who owned it.
Neither of Berlin’s two zoos nor any circuses or animal shelters in the area were missing a lioness.
‘The escaped wild animal has NOT been found yet! We still ask you not to leave the house. If you see the animal, please call the emergency number 110!, police in Brandenburg tweeted earlier this morning.
