Sadly, the culture that built the great cathedrals has vanished already as if it had never been.

Surely that culture was dispersed around the colonies or slaughtered in two world wars

As if a neutron bomb has hit it: the great buildings - cathedrals, churches, palaces, railway stations, museums - will still be standing but the people and the culture that built them will be gone.
