I thought the ONS was being kicked for being too free and easy with the truth. It needs ... correction.

True, it's the head office that is closing. There data is bad enough already, it will become useless

The poor quality of ONS data can only get worse if they move the whole lot to Wales. I really can’t see anyone with an eye on their career moving there. It’s very good news for Statistics graduates from the University of Bangalore. They are the only people that would be willing to take the jobs.

I think Blair is also sacking the head of the public standards committee. You know, the committee who criticises government sleaze. He sacked the previous one for too much criticising.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has launched its personal inflation calculator giving users the chance to work out if the goods they are buying are going up in price faster or slower than the national average.

Visit its website and you can punch in your own spending estimates under a number of headings such as food, clothes and transport.

The results make for interesting reading, especially when you remember that the UK's average inflation rate is 3.9% when measured by the Retail Prices Index (RPI). Meanwhile, the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) stands at 2.7%.
