I assumed not. I was replying to someone who wondered how anyone could take that job.

I dont live in the area...Originally posted by wendigo10035K isn't bad for someone who already lives in the area.
But I agree - I've seen roles in my line of work for not much more than half that, and I wonder what standard of contractor they get.
The job spec says "<client-DHL-working-for> respects the employees and therefore any employee already living in the Paddington area will be highly considered".
Is that code for "we dont expect anyone to even consider moving for this..."
I also just got the bi-monthly trawl from Pepsi after having seen my CV and asking me for "more details". Feck sake...

Nonsense. I bought my first property (2 bed garden flat, zone 5) on my second job 2 years after graduation.Originally posted by tim123People on the sort of salary that a 2-3 year experience grad would get, cannot afford to live on their own in most of the SE. They can't do it now, they couldn't do it 10 years ago, they couldn't do it 20 years ago, and they (probably) couldn't do it 30 years ago.
Nothing has changed here (except the relative cost of buying against renting).

How much you ask? 56K - read it and weep

ITYF that they are relatively recent Grads. A quick calculations shows that this is the same, real-term, salary as I was on when I left a perm job to become a contractor with three years experience. Employers may like to get seasoned people at these salaries, but they rarely can.Originally posted by TonyEnglishI'd love to know how they place people into these types of roles.
I refer the Honorable Gentleman to the answer that I gave in a different thread about being able to live in self contained accomodation in the South East. You'll recall (or not) that I couldn't afford to do this on a perm's salary.Originally posted by TonyEnglishOn that rate, after tax you'll be pulling in about 2k a month. You'll struggle to rent let alone buy on that salary in that location

You don't have to justify yourself to him. If the moeny is not worth it then tell him. Pick a rate you would be happy with and tell him you'll do it for that.

Assuming that you don't have a family to house you can buy a one bed within walking distance of Slough station for 125K. A three bed will cost you 180K.
ISTM that you don't actually find many properties out in the sticks for very much less. This "Living within commuting distance of London is unaffordable" lark is a falacy. What people mean is "I can't live in an up market area within commuting distance of London". Slough may not be the nicest place in the world, but it's only dingy, it isn't unsafe.

Are you a permie or a contractor?Originally posted by SockpuppetGot into an argument with a PIMP this morning.
He said that he had a job in Paddington for £35k to which I responded that there is no way I could afford to live within a reasonable distance on that. (I.e. within an hours commute) and that if I did the buying a house would be out of the question.....and you all knows I hate renting.
Anyone got an idea of rail card costs / housing costs near london so I can prove to him that taking a 20k paycut and a move to the most expensive place in the country is not a good idea.
He's at my current agents so I can tell him to go screw as he's just lined up an extension for me.
Edit: ust turning this into a rant......he should see my current rate and know that I am going to turn this down so why ask me in the first place grrrrrrrr .......

Just goes to show work doesn't pay. Why don't you join the speculation economy and become a property developer?
