No One Wants to live in Bulgaria

Bulgaria was under the Ottoman Empire for nearly 500 years. Churches were closed and the language banned in public. Entire populations of several villages and towns were massacred and replaced with Turks. The Russians drove the Turks out in 1908. Since then Bulgaria has been popular for Russians to live or to have holiday homes. There are also Americans, Germans and British living there (about 20,000).

About 9% of the current population are Muslim/Turks. Erdoğan is saying anywhere Turks live is part of Turkey and during the past few years some Bulgarian Imams have been radicalised on their trips to Turkey.

The fence around the Turkish border was erected by the EU to keep illegal emigrants out of the EU. However, you may now understand why Muslim emigrants are not that popular.

The size of the population per square mile is about the same as Ireland. What the BBC has left out is the booming IT and engineering sector in the cities, it is also home to the making of many “Hollywood” blockbusters having one of the largest film studios in Europe.

The Muslims I met in Bulgaria definitely didn't regard themselves as Turks.

Been there, nice people but the people I met wanted to live elsewhere including the UK. The ones that did move got fat.

Bulgaria is projected to have the fastest-shrinking population in the world. It's already lost a fifth of its population since the 1990s. But what does this mean for those who remain?

Been there, nice people but the people I met wanted to live elsewhere including the UK. The ones that did move got fat.
