    I landed my last gig in this way, after having connected speculatively on LinkedIn first and sending my CV through immediately after, with a nice covering note.

    Yep, with small outfits with no HR operation. Landed a couple of gigs that way. Just picked up the phones, spoke nicely to the receptionist and she put me through to the MD.

    With bigger Cos though you just hit a brick wall. They'll tell you to send your CV to the HR dept and 9 times out of 10 they'll only hire you via their preferred supplier.

    That's my experience anyhow.
