I've read about numerous people having problems with ICICI though ... really basic & fundamental things.

n5gooner, the people on the forums at http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/ are nothing short of obsessive about finding the best deals on savings accounts - you might want to head over there for an in-depth discussion.

    aren't these two mutually exclusive,

    good deals

    and

    want to stash cash

when giving consideration to the ~14% annual printing rate

    perhaps AU ?

National Savings have the best cash ISA. Alliance & Leicester the best interest rate on a savings account, and as it happens on a current account too. The best rate is peanuts more than the competitors, and who is best changes regularly anyway.

Gilts yield is about the same 5.2 or so, only way to beat that with cash is to drip-feed a Regular Savings account.

On the assumption that you need a personal account rather than a business account... the best savings account to my knowledge is the Icesave account (www.icesave.co.uk) which will, in a couple of weeks, be paying 5.45% AER net, or 4.36% (or thereabouts, depending on your income) gross.

Put away ten grand and you'll get roughly £436 at the end of the year. Maybe even enough to keep up with inflation.

Or if you've not yet done so, you could put away 3 grand of your cash in a mini cash ISA account, which generally pay around 5% gross, tax free - so in the region of £500 per year...
