Not so much lead weights as a lead frame which the strings are strung off. Can be profitably weighed in for scrap though

Must have sounded a bit jangly when playing, and been a sod of a weight to carry!

Actually, seriously, upright pianos are heavier than grands, because of the lead weights used to hold the strings in tension.
