Ross Perot got 18.8 % of the vote back in 1992 which translated to 0 electoral votes. Clinton won 43% and got 370 electoral votes.

The odds are stacked against an independent candidate making any inroads worse than they are here.

Perot spent Billions to get that 18% I think he even bought an hour of prime time tv space and went through the whole federal reserve system and how it's been screwing the US since its inception

I think after that the Dem & Rep parties tightened the rules to make sure a crazy 3rd candidate couldn't spend a fortune and upset the apple cart again

guess they never saw the potential in one of their own parties being co-opted by a 3rd party crazy

on the surface Gary Johnson seems ok, I like a lot of the libertarian parties economic policies, and Johnson put them to the test when Govenor of New Mexico with apparent success (according to him I haven't verified)

but Johnson once in the national public glare has come apart quite a lot, there was the Aleppo incident, a time where he kept aggressively challenging a reporter who referred to illegal immigrants, kept correcting him to say they were "undocumented" not illegal, and I think over the weekend he again lost his rag with another reporter

it's a shame because this election of all elections the libertarian party could really have made an impact on the US political landscape but they may have blown it with their choice of candidate

according to Jesse "the body" Venturer they asked him to run as the Libertarian candidate but he said no, someone like might have had a chance

Not sure about "the". There are always a bunch of candidates with varying access to the ballots of individual states. There are four candidates with sufficient access to win the overall electoral college vote, in principle (obviously only two, in practice), but several other minor candidates that could have an impact. For example, Evan McMullin is pushing for a win in Utah, which could change the overall picture.

Everyone knows the US is a two party state, but what would really need to happen for someone other than the big two to not win, I know that will never happen due to the staunch die hard demographics, but enough to shake things up for them to be taken seriously.
