    Actually, what Gate says is not too far from the truth.

    I know that in times of extremis, like WWII , for example, the normal rules were suspended and society became almost 100% socialist. There was a centrally directed supply economy, designed to produce a war machine.

    The fact that we moved to a 'total war' 3 years before the Germans was one of the main reasons that we survived, then beat them.
