(1) Deny the Russians their use of the Tarsus Naval facility
(2) Construct a pipeline from Qatar and/or Saudi Arabia (?) which would reduce dependence on Russian oil and gas
(3) Reduce the influence of Iran and Hesbollah (sponsored by Iran), an ever-present thread to the Israelis
(4) [I surmise] hand the Golan heights over to Israel, and perhaps even another chunk of ex-Syrian land as a Palestinian homeland.
(4a) Secure water supplies for Israel (which will become an acute problem in a few years)
The original idea was to use Iraqi troops; but that foundered as they were useless and their loyalty and commitment questionable. (After all, among other things, Iraq formerly and Assad today are both Sunnis and Baathist, and the Yanks after their occupation of Iraq carefully "de Baathified" the Araqi army and intelligence services, which removed most of its leadership and left them at a loose end ready for all kinds of mischief - see next para.)
The US and Saudi Arabia then created, or at least nurtured, ISIS (who despite their apparent religious fanaticism are led by Iraqi ex-intelligence agents), and have been financing and arming them, in the hope this group would succeed where the Iraqis had failed.
However, their plans have been thrown into confusion by the sudden involvement of Russia. Whether the Russians and Iranians in concert succeed remains to be seen. (I don't think it's a foregone conclusion - A lot of campaigns start well and then run into the ground.)
FWIW, that's my take on the situation.

Simples!
So the US/Saudi's created ISIS to overthrow Assad, Turkey is buying oil off them... the 'good guys' have a lot of explaining to do it would seem.

Apparently this is a very bad thing and instead of all the "good guys" on our side joining in to wipe out ISIS (which we've apparently been doing for the last year) they're all getting terribly upset that Russia are doing it...
Can anyone provide a rational explanation as to why the destruction of ISIS is such a problem for our esteemed leaders?
So much so that NATO are sending troops to Turkey, we're sending troops to the Baltik and our waffling goons are attempting to rattle sabres as though they're at all relevant...
