Aid money were bribes basically, to get extra advantage to UK manufacturers.

UK ending aid to India: Where does the money go? - BBC News

The justification for this to have continued for as long as it has is beyond me, the decision is at least 20 years overdue, the country is far from poor and their inequalities aren't a British problem to resolve.
