"any demand for increase should be justified by increased performance "
Supply and demand. Does your rate keep in line with your performance or are there external pressures on it. Exceptional players get exceptional wages because they are a very scarce resource

It is the football fans who pay the price of Beckhams of this world.

AtW, why do you care?
I thought SKA would see you match Beckhams wealth and fame?
Maybe your image on all the boxes of Kleenex "man size" tissues.

He was probably asking for more because MU probably paid more to some of the useless twits.
Not sure that Keanu was crocked BEFORE he joined Celtic, he was after. He was old but still he could have picked someone who would pay him more for that last half a year and I am pretty sure there were enough English clubs who would have loved him to play for them even if it was just half a year. But he choose Celtic, given lower money I think he did not lie that he wanted to play for them, and this deserves respect.
Beckham on the other hand is overpaid tw@t whose main job is to sell his image to be placed on all sort of tat. Stay tuned for announcements that his marketing partners will be dropping him soon.

Keane was rich, but importantly
1 - he was crocked
2 - he was older
3 - he had been turfed out of United
4 - he didn't have anything like the marketing image Beckham had
As a result his market worth was massively less. Remember also that Keane did say he would leave United if they didn't break their wage structure. At the time he was on £50k per week. That makes him rich in my book - so why was he asking for more?

Was he not rich? Of course he was, even though his face is not plastered on all sort of junk. Yet, Keanu, unlike Beckham, acts like the kind of person that deserves respect - money was certainly not the main driver for Keanu and he sure was not ashamed to join side that is not exactly the world class team.
There is a point of wealth where earning more is almost certainly just for vanity - it is at that point that it becomes clear who deserves respect, and who is a ***t like Beckham.

Beckham is only doing what most people lucky enough to be in his postion would do. Yes he is rich enough to never have to work again, but does that mean that he should offer his services for nothing.
Again this comes as part of a negotiation. Beckham is starting high and Real low. The two will meet at a figure. It is not a good negotiating tack to start by asking for reduced money on the grounds of your age and a dire performance in the world cup.
My point is that Real hold the cards are there are few teams with the status/profile who could take him on and even fewer who actually need him.

Because its a scale thing. If Beckham went to Rochdale, their shirt sales would go through the roof. Most Rochdale fans would buy the Beckham shirt, but the simple fact is that Rochdale do not have the mass support or ther mass media coverage to make any deal viable.
The options for Beckham are limited. He needs a club in the champions league becuase of the coverage its gets. Of those he needs a club with a large following. Of those with a large following, he needs a club who would actually be interested in taking him on. I'd say that the only viable options are the big English and Spanish clubs. He has already burnt his bridges with one big English club, he is already at the biggest club in the world. Barca don't need him, Arsenal and Liverpool couldn't afford him and Chelsea have no need for him either since they don't need the marketing aspect due to the bottomless wallet of their owner.

From ERIC BEAUCHAMP in Madrid
DAVID BECKHAM’S new contract demands are to be REJECTED by Real Madrid.
Becks, 31, was a sub for a third consecutive game last night in the 5-1 Champions League win over Dynamo Kiev.
He will finally open talks over a new two-year deal with Real chiefs tomorrow but the midfield star — axed by England after the World Cup — is set for a major shock as his request for a rise on his £4million-a-year net salary will be rejected.
And the Spanish giants will not entertain reducing the club’s 50 per cent cut of Becks’ off-pitch income.
That will undoubtedly rock the Beckham camp, who believe he is under-rewarded for the marketing millions he earns Real.
But Becks is likely to be offered an extension on his current terms when his deal expires next summer.
Real, who paid out £25m to Manchester United for Beckham in 2003, want to keep him but not at any price.
Ruud van Nistelrooy (2), Raul (2) and Jose Reyes, who sub Becks replaced, struck to destroy Kiev.

Oh dear - looks like hair-cut boy is not even good for marketing reasons there!

This is the final year of his contract so if Real don't offer him something that he likes, he can transfer for free. A Newcastle (or Portsmouth!) could easily do a deal like that, and it would give Beckham more chance of 'shining' at the football as well.
Of course, he may not like moving to an unglamourous club.
