It was not necessary, the issue was with the networking config and also sneaky Kerio firewall that was preventing networking from working even though it was allowed - had to uncheck one mystery checkbox in it to make it all work.
VMplayer is great idea - would not bother installing Linux, but now actually I can easily use it for testing when needed.

make sure you install the vmware tools (assume it comes with vmplayer .. does with workstation) ....

Linux is a good OS if you know exactly what to do via SSH.
If you want control then Gentoo is the way to go, otherwise you have to line up with the other lemmings and be spoon fed, before jumping off the cliff to end up in Gatesville.
