They don't care if you bulltulip, I have even had agents ask me to amend my CV slightly to add in extra details to make me look more suitable for a role (not that I have ever added in flase information, I don't want to look like a c**t when it comes to interview/when I start the job)

I think the phone calls are basically to try and see if you are bulltulipting on your CV. It´s not that they have a clue about anything technical, but as one of them told me once "It´s about trying to get a feeling about the person" (that´s why they argue that their job can´t be automated).

I never bother with a covering letter (Like they actually ever read it, the useless fu***rs can't even read my Resume and have to get me to tell them what's on it when they phone up!!) and never try to phone the agent (scum) about a job. I just load up jobserve, do a search on jobs with 0 days and apply for absolutely everything that matches my skill set.

Then sit back and wait, the phone will normally start ringing about 30 mins later (**Tip** get an 0870 number, then you can chat to the agent as long as you like and get paid for it too!!!) and keep going on and off for the rest of the day. Repeat and rinse for a week and a couple of interviews is inevitable.

If you are not getting anything back you don't have enough buzz words in your resume. All they do is fillter out the buzz words and if you have a good buzz word match on your resume they call you up to talk about it.

New to the UK and starting the Contract search for the first time. I get the impression from reading other posts that it is important to act quickly on a Jobserve post that matches your criteria, etc.

Just wondering what the norm is -- do you use the "apply online" -- with just your CV uploaded or do you email the agent with the CV and/or a cover letter type email...(really don't want to bother with cover letters yet though)!

Any advice out there

i find its good to follow up the CVs by phoning the agent... they may have other things on the cards that they may put you in for after talking about skills etc...

I always ring up and talk to them about the job, and then send a CV to a 'real' person's email, not just to the generic one that Jobserve (usually)presents you with.

Having said that, I don't have a very good success rate with JS applications. In the past three months that I've been looking, only two applications actually proceeded to a point where I was being considered for a genuinely live job (but OTOH there was only one other opportunity that proceeded to this point).

Mate, I don't mean to be unkind but contracting may not be for you. Like someone said, if you've got the skills, the agent will be after you in a matter of minutes if not seconds after sending your CV, like most people here may have experienced. By ringing them incessantly and leaving messages on their voicemail, it's like a minger that you gave your number by mistake ringing you all the time and you not picking up the phone. It's sort of harassment, don't do it. I wouldn't anyway. Pestering them for their direct e-mail address may or may not be helpful, as this is what we used to do up to about 2-3 years ago until Jobswerve came up with a dedicated e-mail address for each job so that the agent's e-mail doesn't get clogged up with 50 or so responses for each job(don't forget that an agent may be responsible for more than 1 jobs simultaneously advertised, so they'll look at the right e-mail box accordingly)

I did try that to discuss the role and check my suitability before submitting my CV, but the woman whose name was in the ad never answered and messages left on her answerphone were not returned. After several hours of trying I gave up and submitted my CV via Jobserve to avoid missing the opportunity.
Not a good start, but I'll keep trying.
