Not all agents work for other people's firms.

I've had agents who like my CV call me and then send me an email. They may have no roles at the moment but what they are hoping for is when I'm out of contract whether it's this year or in two years time I tell them so they can make money out of me.

Then I've had the sh*ts like you have. They call you with the perfect role that doesn't exist and because it's not their company they really don't know how to take the conversation forward as they realise attempting to get your "references" isn't going to work. They know they will move on within a year and can't take any of the candidates they talk to with them.

    (In)explicable Agency Approaches

Agencies call you, but you're never sure what for.

Why, for example, does an agent call you just to have a half-hour chat about nothing in particular? I concluded that they just want to look busy in the office.

More recently I've experienced a new form of these perplexing calls.

An agent calls with the perfect contract. (Yet not so perfect that it matches exactly what's on your c.v.... an obvious scam.)

You say, “go ahead and submit me”; and that's the last you hear: they don't even E-mail you the details of the post as you agreed with them.
