Applying for multiple role within the same organisation: acceptable?

Just imagine the situation, where you have to decline one of them and then sitting next to the same hiring manager day in and day out? I would definitely not do it, unless both the hiring managers are aware that they are looking at the same resource. It is highly likely that both of them would put you as a second choice as they would not want to fight with each other over a contractor.

Which is exactly where I have been twice in my current gig, interviewed for 2 got 1, 'not enough experience' for the other.

Been at the org nearly 3 years, moved internally to firefight flailing projects to find the first time I was the replacement of the hiring manager that I didnt have anough experience to report into, we sat next to each other for a week before he moved internally.

And second time i was coming to an end so was applying internally, interviewed with 2 guys who said no. I am now sat a bank of desks away reporting into their MD directly to cover another project.

None of the chaps were/are too impressed, dont make eye contact etc. but I am perfectly professional and say morning anyway - who cares.

While I have heard of people being denied both roles when speaking to more than one hiring manager on the permanent side (on the basis of lack of integrity), the agents lead me to believe the practice is more than acceptable among contractors.

Anyone had any problems with the HR (business partners), hiring managers or whatsoever by applying to more than one role within the same organisation? When it comes to interviewing it is fair to make both managers aware of the situation. I know some people choose to go silent about it though.
