I have been VCP certified for the past 5 years (3/4/5). If you aren't using the product on a daily basis, doing the certification doesn't mean much, since it is a hands-on technology and you need to be familiar with using it. The certification will require in-depth knowledge of subject matter that you will never likely come across in casual use, also storage and networking that you need to be familiar with.
£1k for online training? Is it worth it - imho, no...I would also question the credibility of the course and whether it is accepted by VMware - go to vmware.com and look through their Education site and see whether they are accredited for VCP training.
A cheap intro would be to buy this book and read it - you will be questioned on all the sections in it:

Personally, I have found the VCP to have been invaluable and have provided a great source of income over the past 6 years. I am not going to debate Stek's statement since it doesn't bear upon your original question.

You can do the exam, but until you take their course you will not be certified.
Check out late availability courses - they are the cheapest.
