Scope of contract tasks

I've been asked to line manage someone and take over coordination of a project to cover for someone for 3 weeks. This wasn't what I signed up for. I don't mind taking on the extra responsibility re the task but to line manage/supervise? Not really sure how to handle this one. Has it happened to anyone else before?
