And your skillset is?Originally posted by Mr.Whippy View PostThe market is extremely quiet for my skillset, which is fairly niche/specialist.

Haha, previously I take a month or two off and do some travelling. This is a welcome change however!Originally posted by Mr.Whippy View PostYou wish? I'm sure there are plenty of long time benched people who are wishing for a contract right now, perhaps you could swap?... although with only £425/day you might not get many takers

So which market areas do you see that are sluggish right now?Originally posted by Mr.Whippy View PostThat depends on the marketplace you're in though. Some are better than others.

Yeah, but also good to gauge opinions which is why I posted in the first place.Originally posted by Mr.Whippy View PostThat depends on the marketplace you're in though. Some are better than others.

But coming on here whining that you never get what you deserve (perhaps you're not as good as you think you are eh?) and that you're only getting a paltry £425/day after a week of bench time isn't really going to win you many friends.

No bench time, I wish. Moving from one to the other (and still billing current till end of august as still doing handover sessions / documentation).

To repeat, I'm not complaining at all. Just thinking out loud I guess.

Well done Pete always good to be in work.Originally posted by Peter Loew View PostAs the title says, I (and another consultant) was given notice due to Defra cuts and de-scoping of our projects.

Since last week I've had two interviews one of which (the preferred one) has made me an offer. The offer is £5 less than my current day rate, and to be honest is not great at 425 p/d. I was thinking of negotiating the rate, however due to my need to stay in work I didn't want to jeopardise the role or their impression of me being happy with the rate they offered, so I accepted.

It's more than enough to get me by, but I always feel I never quite get the rates I deserve!

Anyhow, back into the private sector I go! See you boys and girls in the City!

Personally I would see a rate drop on a low rate as a personal failure and wouldn't have taken it. But I was suppose someone has to buckle.

 Good luck anyway though.

I hate to agree with BB (and god knows I do) but £5 per day, puleeese!!!Originally posted by BolshieBastard View PostI dont know if this is meant to be a joke or something!

Loads of contractors on the bench and you're whinging about being on 5 quid a day less on frankly a better than average rate while the recession (in all but name) rumbles along?

This is a slow time of year so you are lucky to get interviews, in a few months the market will be flooded with public sector types on the redundancy line, looking to undercut you.

If you have got the warchest the hold out for what you think will be the right rate.

OK, but you need to regain the psychological advantage.

Cut them another £5/day and call it a loyalty discount. Show them you value the contract, but it's you who'll be setting rates from now on.
