I'd just shut it and use your capital gains limit in the process as part of that process. The usual suspects on here generally set up a new Ltd for free and in a matter of days, so you'll actually be better off.

I kept my company open when I did it, but then I think that's because I realised pretty early on that I wasn't going to last in Permieland. See if your accountant will reduce their fees if you're not invoicing.

You can mark your company as dormant which sets it as non-trading but not closed. Your accountant can advise accordingly.

Yeap I've done it. I kept company open, deregistered from VAT myself, deregistered from PAYE. I just send in the companies house return each April saying no trading has taken place. I should probably tell HMRC I am no longer trading but haven't done that yet. Accountant charged £250 for the part years accounts, which I thought was a bit steep but as yet has forgotten to invoice me. Result.

Hopefully will start up my business again at the end of this year, once mortgage has been approved and picked up my bonus.

Didn't mean to get all political. Well I did really. FWIW, I'm not sure that any of them getting in will improve the current situation. Both parties have made a complete balls up of the country, so how do you choose between them.

Anyway, it is uncertain what may happen in the future and I am hoping that a permie job may be better for the short term.

My warchest is currently non existant at the moment, so cannot really afford to hang around for another couple of months to wait for a contract, and who knows what is around the corner if Cameron gets in.

Thought it would be a good way to extend my experience in a few key areas as well, so when I move back over I will be in a better position.

Any ramifications of closing the company other than costs to restart again?
