Few weeks back there was a show in BBC "The day migrants left". In a nutshell, it concluded
* UK economy will collapse without migrants (be it East Europeans or Asians)
* Most employers think Britons are least preferable for most jobs because they are plain inefficient
Offshoring is inevitable. Only job security is your own ability. Days or lucrative contracting job is over. There will always be a few good ones but for that one need to rise on value chain.

Agreed, this is brilliant work ! I used to think it would all come back eventually, forget that, the costs are prohibitive and all the expertise it has taken years to build up has gone for most places. The real reason though is that the quality will improve, there is no doubt about this. They said quality manufacturing wouldn't go for the same reason, now the quality is a match or better. For many companies IT is not core to the business and exists as a large non-revenue generating cost. hardware and software dev costs will continue to fall and will become more reliable reducing the support and maintenance required. There will be niche operators and a fair number of people still needed on-shore but expecting the sea to change direction is very naive.

If this isnt a deliberate wind up then this is one of the funniest things Ive read on here.

For what it’s worth, I’ll add some words to the thread.
I am currently working for a major bank in Europe, who have decided to offshore all their design, build (development), and testing to India. This will take 2-3 years, and will cost some 60 Million Euros, well that's their idealised budget. I've got news for them
During this time they will make extensive use of the contractors they already have, and ultimately have to hire some new ones, so plenty of work for now
I can tell you now from the way they are approaching the offshoring process, it will be a train wreck. It will take a couple of years for the wreck to occur, followed by another two years to repair all the damage, by which time someone who will have replaced the current CIO responsible (as he will be blamed), will then spend another 2-3 years onshoring it all again.
Why will it fail? Because they’re going into this as a ‘black box’ approach, trusting the ‘big name consultancy’ to expertly manage it offsite
They don’t want to invest in an internal offshore management team as their teams are too busy delivering other projects to be reassigned, nor do they want to be involved in close follow up and monitoring of the teams in India, as they think this exposes them to being held accountable if something goes wrong
Think I’m wrong about this being a flawed approach, then just Google how to manage an offshore outsourcing project.
Did I mention they’re going to offshore all the banks core systems!
Don’t worry, there’ll be work for us for a while to come yet. Yes you’ll have to move companies constantly, but that’s contracting anyway. In the end it will come full circle, and they’ll always need some local experts to mitigate risk.

Back when HAB was a young shaver being the recipient of business mentoring and all that stuff that was big in the 80’s I had a mentor who came out with a line that always stuck with me: “The best thing to do with anyone who makes themselves indispensable, or thinks themselves so, is to dispense with them immediately. Having them around is dangerous.”

You must be living in a cocoon or for very small enterprises if you've never worked with significant numbers of Bobs. It doesn't matter if you are 'da man' or not - some Bob further up the scale will be making the decision via spreadsheet, nothing else.
