I lost out on one last week (actually two on the same day) but this one went:

Technically very strong candidate

Got on with him very well - nice guy

We feel the position wouldn't be technically challenging enough for him


so, am I expected to dumb down now?

14 face-to-face interviews since November and no offers. Either they're afraid of me or think I'm a w4nker (or both).

Was my point before the the usual trolls jumped on the thread.

I have just finished a 3.5 year contract with multiple extensions and a couple of agents have asked why did I leave a permie job!

Yes, I can kind of understand why they thought it was permie but with the way the market has been for the last 2 years at least, there was no way I was jumping into uncertainty.

Yes I guess we've all had it. You apply for a job and feedback is you're over qualified. I mean HTF does that work? You can either do the job or not.

And we're not talking of applying for junior roles either. Saw a role as a test manager so applied for it. Agent came back and said they thought I may be over qualified.

Actually it makes perfect business sense, if they want someone long-term.

Over qualified staff are more likely to get bored, care about the company less, and jump ship at the first opportunity.

Don't take it to heart..... we all know that this "feedback" is only a curtesy - I very much doubt it really was fedback from any real situation - I think the "process" (for want of a better word) is "how do we tell him to pish off (without making him feel bad)" I know, I will tell him he was too good.... Nah can't do that... what about "overqualified" Yeah that'll do it "Pish off" without being negative......

Either that or you came across as an "arrogant twunt"/"Very confident" and the bloke/blokette didn't think they could "cope" without punching you/ making them look bad.....

I normally look at test lead roles so imho, there aint that much difference between the two. Might understand it if they had said under qualified

I agree it's a ludicrous reason to be given.

Odds are they found someone barely qualified/experienced or a redundant permie that doesn't understand what rates mean that was willing to do the job a LOT cheaper.
