    For me a nightmare

it was the worst contract I've ever had. I've been on the bench 2 months now and there's no way I would ever consider going back to the team I was in. It was so 'in-Flex' able ;-)

My 'manager' was a very inexperienced public schoolboy t0sser and his manager was an experienced public schoolboy, who also happened to be a t0sser. Both were inept and had a confrontational attitude to management. Conversations between them were the kind that should really have been taken away from the department. Always in your face from day one as well. Each day lasted a week and each week a month. Couple that with a 10% rate cut in the first week for all contractors and it was hell on earth. After a few months I ended up leaving, taking a month in the sunshine and then returning to one of the best contracts I've ever had. It wasn't a decision I made lightly as it was a time when all the banks were on the brink, but I didn't care, I just couldn't stand it a day more. The difference in culture between these two clients was unbelievable.

Having said all this, a mate landed a contract in another team on the same floor (Samson House) and the culture there was completely different. I could see him 30 yards away laughing and smiling while I was quite the opposite. Still, you can't pick them all can you?

Got flexible hours agreed beforehand on my current gig. Then the PM tried to back out 3 weeks into the role. I wouldn't mind, but he doesn't turn up until mid-day... One argument later, I'm back on flexible hours.

A few months back there were were loads of jobs at RBS, getting called left/right and center about BA\PM roles.... it has dies down since then.... my interviewer did mention there is a need of staff but there is too much red tape and the recruitment process takes ages.... my interview process started in Nov 2009 and i have only just been offered the role... this included 5 interviews - unheard of as a contractor!

Mate of mine contracts there. Oracle DBA. He's been working for them on-and-off for the last 5 years.

He says it's a "mixed bag", down to the PM and the specific project you are on. His PM is fairly laid back and he can work from home a couple of days a week; in other places in the company that sort of thing has been stamped on.

He's had a couple of projects with "nightmare" PMs, but fortunately for him they've either left, or he's moved on to other projects.

So, all-in-all, it's like any other big company - i.e. you aren't going to know for sure until you start and get a feel for the project and the team you'll be working with.
