Serious question

Why are so many peopel complete and utter knobs? Seriously, with life being so short and the dangers of a nasty illness, being run over by a bus, all sorts of tragedy that might suddenly occur, why are so many people, mainly in their jobs but often throughout their entire lives, complete and absolute knobs, vinidcitive, nasty, back-stabbing? Why?
