I tend to churn out the names of some fictional characters. Guy Montag was the reference for my current gig. I'm guessing they didn't bother to follow it up.
I've also used the name of the CEO of a previous company as well. Again, no idea if it was chased up, but I imagine the p!pm ringing through to HR asking to speak to <insert CEO of global investment bank> and wondering how long it took for the penny to drop.

Agent messing around?
Just had an agency call me back twice in 2 days in regard to a role I have applied for. The end client I have done some work for as a contractor and I also worked for them as a permie (14 years ago).
The first call was to ask me to state who my line manager was as a permie and as a contractor. I said I thought it was irrelevant and said I was happy to supply references. When I said I didn't think any of them would be still in the company they still insisted.
The second call just now was to insist that I put the exact dates on my CV for when each contract was - including my last permie role. I currently just have durations of each contract.
I am livid (as well as sick!)
I was told it was "due to the SLA they have with the end client! 
I am going to (reluctantly) do it since I think I stand a good chance of getting the role but am I being too sensitive or have the agency got a complete cheek?
