I had a recent experience like that. My contract was up and i knew i was going to get extended but didn't want to extend as it was in London and had had enough of Virgin Trains every week. I told the client direct that even if they were going to extend that i wouldn't want to. They then must have told the agency as i never got a word from them.
Legally your bound by the dates in the contract and there is nothing stopping you from walking out at the end of it with notice or reason. But like said on here it is proffessional to let them know as they give you a good reference or even ask you back in the future.

The notice will only be valid in the period of the contract. If you haven't signed an extension, then you should be able to leave at the end of the current contract with no notice at all. Saying that, I think it would be professional to let them know you don't want renew, even if you only tell the immediate client. Then you might get a reference, whereas if you leave them in the poo, you might not !
A better strategy might be to just keep the contract going and look elsewhere for something which can wait for 4 weeks notice. At least you get money coming in.

Contracts in Birmingham
Hello all,
I'm coming to the end of my contract next week and I know the client wants me to extend but I want to find a contract closer to home. I haven't received anything from my agency to say that the client wants to extend it.
Do i still need to give the usual 4 weeks notice or can i just let them know now that I will not be renewing my contract and leave next week. I don't want the agency to turn around and say that I have broken the terms of my contract and as a result will not pay my wage.
Also does anyone know of any contract positions becoming available in Birmingham or the West Midlands. I specialise in Microsoft technologies, am certified with an MCSE 2003 and have a lot of exposure to virtualisation and migrations.Tags: None
