Mate that's quite a story! I liked your 'under pressure line'.

Well, mine actually went really well. It was supposed to last 45 mins but at the end of it the interviewer wanted me to meet his superior right away rather than wait for a second stage. Had a good chat with her and she seemed keen. The role sounds good, and location is great, and package is decent for a permie. But again... it's not a contract and as such I have that reluctance swimming in the back of my head.

The agent called me back that same evening and said they were very pleased with me and asked if I can wait till the end of week for an answer as they are interviewing someone else tomorrow and they don't want to loose me as the potential man. All very positive but I am a contractor!!!!!! Ahhh!

Top that off I got another permie interview about a 20 min walk from where I live on Monday!

Also just had a phone interview for a fixed term contract, and just had a call for another PM interview tomorrow (contract) which I am also keen on. So what I have to do now is juggle them all and see what comes out on top.

I had an absolute nightmare! short story is the bloody sat-nav decided to tell me i was at my destination, when i was clearly doing 90mph on the outside lane! luckily gave myself a good extra half hour, and tried to call the guy 15min before the interview. 5 mins past the interview time, and i called him again. he called me back about 5 mins later, and the would-be line manager talked me in to the office. i was 20mins late! not good for a PM proving he can plan! 45mins in to the interview that i think went very well, and the receptionist came and pointed out that i'd parked in the wrong car park, in the wrong space, blocking someone and i had to move it.

I moved it and on return all i could say was 'at least this is a very good example of me performing under pressure!'. should get call back today, but not massively hopeful. Altho i'm still not sure i would want to go back to perm just 4mths after leaving. i've had several calls and my agency have offered me an extension, but on a different part of the programme...

will let you know the outcome tho!

    What about you?

I left my consulatancy permie job for a locally based permie job, with the vision of staying a while. After 14 months, I got itchy feet again, so went contracting - by which time I'd had lots more experience that increased the chances of decent contract roles.

Yes, it's possible. Have the interview and see if you like the look of the place before considering it though.

That's what I am going to do, but do you think it is worth discussing such a thing during the interview question period or after you get an offer?

If during it may decrease your chances of getting the offer...

i was approached direct by the client after i applied for a contract, who phone interviewed me then asked about what it would take to make me perm. i gave him a minimum figure, he came back with a bigger one, plus tech training, bonus and car allowance etc. overall package he talked about was nearly equivlent to contacting money but with priceless training ina global growing company.

i am going for interview, but will be talking about taking it as a contract with a possible view after x amount of time...

    Always worth the conversation.

Yes of course you can try and convert the job into a consultancy contract, if it's that kind of job. Clients try it on in the other direction all the time.

Cheers good luck to you too.

But like I previously asked, do you think we could ask our respective potential employers to offer the same kind of package as a day rate? Hmm...

I do have this contract till end of July, but its murdering me. i'm doing nothing and i feel like i'm wasting away. would the 2 week notice period go against me for new contracts?
This is not Stockport... I am based in London area. No I don't think it would go against you, you don't even have to say you finished prematurely.

50k-ish role... what do you guys think - shall I use them to get all my PRINCE2 certs then go off contracting again?!

It is very tempting, but like you say Tazman, I have just finished my first contract which lasted for 9 months, although I am well financially, I want more.

But this could be an easy way to get more experience for my contracting future.
