Mine started as monthly and then after a while I got permission to do them quarterly, but I never really understood why. I think it might something you have to apply for. There is also something called a Zusammenfassende Meldung that needs to be done every quarter.

In the UK, my accountant didn't cover quarterly VAT so I managed to deal with it myself. I suppose I could do the same here to save a bit of money.
