    HMRC websites are down for the first week of April for an upgrade (it's been discussed elsewhere). If you are relying on the website to make a submission, then you can't. So, the recommendation is that you do it early.

    If you don't do it early, then HMRC have said that they won't penalize you for being late, though. However, HMRC still expects VAT returns to be filed “as soon as possible” when its service resumes on April 6th, so I would file when you can.

    HMRC are taking their online system offline for a few days for maintenance, so you need to be careful if you have a February VAT return that's not been filed yet.
