Working in Germany, registration without residence?

I have been offered a contract in Germany until the end of the year. It looks to me that this means that I should register as Freiberufler right from the start, no? Problem might be, I will not be resident in Germany, and don't intend to get an address there. Do you need a German address/residence to be able to register as Freiberufler?
