If he's doing his job properly as a project manager he'd know exactly what you are billing anyway. How else would he be able to keep on top of how much the project has cost so far and to predict the total spend?
Don't worry about him knowing. Contactors cost more on the face of it because all of the benefits are in one payment and they are easy to get rid of when necessary. People who work with contractors a lot understand that. If he was that bothered he'd go contracting himself.

He'd still know how much you were billing regardless of who you addressed the invoice to. You need to lose your forelock-tugging British money hangups in this game.

Invoicing direct - how do you feel about invoicing direct management?
I invoice weekly, direct to a permie who is effectively one up from my line manager. He is also the project manager for the project I am working on, and I work closely with him.
I always feel uncomfortable sending off my invoice each Friday, as it makes it very obvious to him what I am billing. Of course, I'd much rather bill someone who I dont have to work with on a daily basis - such as a secretary, or someone in finance. Has anyone else been in this situation?
I realise this is a very minor annoyance, but wondered if anyone else had any related experience they could share?
