Not 100% sure what you are trying to do here as your question seems to be confusing different scenarios, but if it is actually work for US company while you are in the US (either on site or off site) then answer is no.

If it is for your UK Ltd (important point, your Ltd is not "you") to do business with a US company with odd visit for you stateside for meetings/conferences and such then yes the VWP will suit your needs

In the area of visa's 'Business' is generally considered attending meetings/conferences and not much else. Anything that can be classed as 'employment' to be performed in the country normally requires a work visa of some type of another.

So in his case, if he was working in the states it would not matter if the employer was an American company or his UK ltd, he would still be employed in the states if he was actually working there, thus requiring a visa

The conditions stipulated state that VWP can be used provided the trip is for tourism or business.

I would have thought that providing services via your limited company would be classed as business.

However a recent client enquiry on a visa from Australia or N.Zealand (forget the visa type but something to do with study) had to earn a minimum level of salary to support themselves (as advised by someone at a UK embassy), this was stipulated as salary so a mix of low salary and dividend wouldn't have worked in their case.

I would advise that you ring your nearest US embassy to confirm.
