Nope you don't gain any employment rights.
Everybody who works for a company regardless of whether they are permanent, temp, on a fixed term contract, subcontractor or a contractor working through own limited/umbrella company, has rights in law under the various discrimination acts and health and safety at work acts from day one.

wasn't the EU/NuLabour going to bring in these "rights", which would have just meant people would be paid less and be taxed and regulated more- just as socialists/commies like it

This is not true, surely?!
At Deutsche Bank contractors are limited to 9 months. And at JP MOrgan they are limited to 3 years. I bet there are others....

hmm, someone at client co is concerned about long term contractors (ie me!), as apparently after a certain length of time they gain "rights" (I'm assuming he means employee type rights)
