I read about these scams during my research but that wasn't what prompted looking into DPA registration. What got me thinking about it was PCG's recommendation that I give this consideration. As well as being a legal requirement for any company who store personal data it supposedly helps to portray you as a 'proper' business. This can help strengthen the case that you are operating outside of IR35 (although I fully appreciate that this is a small pointer <-- but, hey, every little detail could help if investigated!)

something else to think about. over the years I have received several letters from organisations pretending to be 'Data protection register Ltd' or words to that effect. they tell me i am not on the data protection register (which i know), remind me of the fines payable for not being on it ( I am not required to be on it) and offering to add me to the register for a fee much larger than the real registration fee. the letters had no phone number on them, just a PO Box address if I recall correctly. it was a scam. if your original query is as a result of this type of letter contact the real data protection people to confirm what is required.

My company got registered soon after startup, because it specialised in payroll systems so there was a lot of clients' protected data involved. I've kept it up ever since, although it's not really needed any more.

Probably a good thing to have - if a client looks up your company on the register and finds it, that's got to be reassuring.

Data Protection Act Registration

Hello CUK!

I'm currently giving some thought to Data Protection Act registration. I was wondering what people's perspectives were on this topic and whether they are registered or not?

Having given this some thought I will be recording/storing personal data and should therefore register. However, it seems a tad overkill as this data will be about my wife as she will be employed by my company (yes I plan to be a dirty income shifter for as long as I can!).

Ps. Go easy on me ladies and gents. I know I'm a newbie to this forum but at least my first posting wasn't "What is IR35?".
