The major thing to consider these days when employing anyone is that employers are now in large part unpaid administrators of the tax and benefits system. A typical melange of things you need to consider are: Employers' NI, tax credits, possible maternity benefits, possible student grant repayments, statutory sick pay, paid holidays, pension scheme provision (although at present only if you have 5 or more staff), national minimum wage, statutory document production (payslip, P60, P11D, etc.), increased liability premiums, extra accountancy fees. There are more, but this is a good selection of the major ones.

Expat Ltd's?
To all you expats in the UK: how are you freelancing? Did you set up a UK Ltd or did you just sign up with a brolly company? Is there another way to handle everything?
I have a kiwi cousin coming over and one option I had was to offer the possibilty of making her an employee of my Ltd if she gets a contract. That would at least make it simpler for her. Any drawbacks for either of us in doing this?Tags: None
