What is an "investment company" ?

I've read a lot of discussion on here about income shifting, what to do with large surplus of money, buying investments through ltd co etc. etc. and I'm curious as I haven't found an answer to this yet - what qualifies your ltd co as an "investment company" if it does start buying shares etc. ?
