So I gave them a call to check they still had the dispensation. I was told initially that they cannot provide any assistance with tax returns without me paying for this service but after a lot of persistence I was able to get the person to call someone else who then confirmed the dispensation is still in place and I need not put any expenses on my tax return.

I'm left wondering if I now have some black mark against my name for leaving them as they appear to me to be almost deliberately unhelpful nowadays. It's got to the point where I just don't trust what they tell me (especially about expenses!).

So, does that sound right that the dispensation is still in place or does the fact that they now require receipts mean they may have actually lost their dispensation? Basically, I want to double check that I can ignore the expenses section on my tax return.

What was the score Lewis, I did not get a tax return as my earnings were well below the threshold as it were but I did have some expenses that I simply don't have receipts for like you I could have kept many but didn't as I at the time did not know I had to.

While we get wound up and try and be honest others are merrily carrying on regardless.

Ask them for their PAYE reference number and contact their tax office for clarification!
