Because the law changed a couple of years ago. Employers now have to keep evidence that all their employees are legally entitled to work in the UK.

I was in a similar position (lost passport and drivers licence and birth certificate), you can pick up a copy of your birth certificate for @£13 from your local registrar, no id required.

you would have thought, but despite being able to produce driving licence NI etc apparently it is the LAW (according to these muppets) that it must be valid passport or birth cert. as I said before how come I have been legal all these years yet suddenly I am not.

Surely an expired passport is proof of identity? It may not be valid for international travel, but it is as valid a proof of identity 1 month after expiry as it is 1 month before expiry.Originally posted by AnonimouseI obviously had my birth certificate originally to enable me to obtain my passport. My passport has expired and I can't find my birth certificate, what's odd about that? The USA don't have a problem with me, they granted me a multi entry indefinate visa.
Unfortunately I probably have worked with some of you lot over the years, having been a contractor for 12 years.
That's the the query I have never had a issue before with id, during that time.

If you have no birth certificate or other proof of identification, you can get a chartered accountant to provide a letter as proof of identity. Most accountants will charge for this service however!!!!

You're probably working or have worked with some of them. I know a lot of contractors who read this site, but whether they contribute or not is different, I have been reading CUK for about two years but only recently registered.Originally posted by AnonimouseWhat a nice friendly place this is NOT! well certainly know where not to come for help and advice in future. Maybe in the real world I will meet some contractors who can point me in the direction of help and advice. It sure ain't here.
