    I'd agree, if you can show it was to help the business in whatever way (promoting it, training, contacts etc) then surely it is ok.
    What is the difference to say placing an ad in a publication or hosting your own site?.
    As long as its not excessive it won't stand out from the list of other genuine costs.

    My accountants are saying I cant claim expenses for conferences. Is that right?

    I would have thought that as long as what ever you were claiming for was purely business based then it would be ok?
