True, for non aussies residents, Ayers use a structure called LAFHA (Living away from home allowance) which reduces your tax footprint, but is still nowhere near as effective as running a ltd/pty company in oz, the Lafha also reduces your compulsary superannuation contribution (9%).

You can also put through monthly expenses and Ayers are fairly painless in doing tax returns.

But as you already have Oz residency, you may not qualify for this, and they will want to make some "hay" off you, not sure how best this is, either way, negotiate the rate you want and stick to it, don't just drop your rate because you "want" to come to oz, all the ayers stuff can come after the rate negotiation, which is not the original point of your question.

Don't know what rates you expect, but specific apps specialist, 800/900 a day aussie pesos, Datawarehouse/tech/SAP/BW/Oracle/Teradata/BA 650/700 odd, which equates to as root said, about 300 gbp a day.

not great rates by any stretch of the imagination when the similar positions in London would easily come in in excess of 400 for the BA and 500 for the apps specialist.

so, negotiate before you get here... and go hard!

I did not find the rates that bad when I was last working in Oz (last year) must have been lucky! - I am just interested in where I would be paying tax... if theUk compnay would pay into my UK account of into an Australia account. I think I need to talk to a tax accountant.

In my skillset you are talking maybe 300 quid a day in Oz, but 400-450 in the UK.

Have a look at http://www.ayersmanagement.com/sitemap.htm, I think they may have changed name now but are still at that office in Nth Sydney when I last was there. The owner is called John Levings and he was always pretty good at sorting out my tax affairs. They have an umbrella setup but also setup Ltd's if that make sense. There are quite a few other accountants offering offshore schemes and the like but I think they are all pretty dodgy when you look into them and will charge a hefty percentage of your gross.

Rates here in OZ suck, there are no two ways about it, if you get a good rate they want you to work 24/7, if you get a sh!t rate, they still expect the same.

my advice, pin them to the UK Rate, do not allow yourself to be impressed by the sun, sea, sand etc etc, get the rate, stick to it, and don't negotiate, even if they say the old "well, you know , for this type of work it's paid at a rate here in oz..."

thats' all bollo(ks, get what you can, and as I have said before , you are a contractor, not an employee, get the rate!

Sounds simply like it'll just be a case of a new contract issued at the Oz end when you get there. The rates are pretty ropey so if you can use your UK rate as a starting point for negotiations and convert it into Oz dollars you'll be doing well. I'm not really up with the modes of working anymore, the government were attempting an IR35 of sorts when I was last there but I can give you a decent accountant if you like, they run an Oz version of Ltds and umbrellas.
