Call a few accountants ask questions relevant to your business and see who you get the best feel for (no pun intended!)

I would pick your accountant based on a service tailored to you and price (although do not let price be the deciding factor).

Good luck and let us know how you get on

I've used intouch for 3 years and have frequently recommended them to others looking to go contracting. I have no complaints with their service it's always be top notch.

I guess the trick for the OP is trying to identify the decent ones. There are plenty hopeless ones too :-)

The debate at the moment seems to be spreadsheet v online, and then if it's online should it be bespoke or off-the-shelf, and then if off-the-shelf, which one should it be. For me, and I'm also biased, it should be online, off-the-shelf, FreeAgent. But if I'm entirely honest, this isn't as important as the relationship you'll strike up with your accountant. There really isn't any need to meet your accountant these days, but if the option to do so is important, then consider the geography. If you a one-to-one relationship with a partner/director then look to the smaller firms. But remember that even some of the bigger firms will give you a one-to-one relationship, but with an account manager. That also works.

Once you've narrowed it down to the kind and size of accountant you want, seek recommendations from those who's opinion you trust - colleagues, friends etc. Then make a shortlist, call up a few, ask some pertinent questions relevant to you, see if you like the answers and make your decision.

I might be a little biased in my response...

    http://forums.contractoruk.com/accou...-requests.html

But give a few a call, to go through your circumstances and what you are looking for.

You should then get a feeling if the package is right for you.

For example, online software v spreadsheet, personal accountant v customer services.
