    Finance Bill for Non Residents

    Hi All

Is there any information on how the Finance Bill will affect non residents? I will not be returning to the UK for the foreseeable future and wonder if I am in the same boat as those living in UK.

I will seek professional advice, but wanted to discuss on here also. I assume that there will be plenty more people in my position.

    Thanks

    Harrai

What country are you now based in? I believe a lot will hinge on whether there's a MARD in place between the UK and the country you're in as to whether the debt is even enforceable &/or collectible.

UK has a MARD with NZ (and a few other non-EU countries) but does not have one with Australia.

In reality few countries are interested in collecting another country's tax.

With UK leaving EU, the MARD will look more like a giant T**D.

Although as ever, you will owe the UK authorities, i.e. the Crown, money and should you appear they will expect the cash.

In reality, other some countries do collect another country's tax simply because they want their tax collected in similar circumstances. It's also unlikely that other countries would welcome tax avoiders with open arms. You may also have to fight your corner in another country's courts which may be a complete pain in the ass.

If you're planning on leaving, and never returning, look at countries, such as Ireland, which takes a dim view on retrospective legislation.

The UK is sinking anyway, so leaving may be a strategic move anyway.

              As ever - get advice.

There is a MARD with Australia which has been agreed ton terms of wording but has not been ratified as yet.

I have no idea when/if that might happen.

Has anybody in Australia (Melbourne) sought local advice? Anybody found someone knowledgeable enough in this field whose details they may be able to share? If so please PM me.
