I remember reading an analysis in The Economist not so long ago that said the real reason that house burglaries are down is not because of police efforts but that the things the traditional burglar used to dispose of down the pub aren't worth anything: the value of second hand tellies, DVD players, stereos and the like just doesn't make the effort worth while.
