The fighters need RPG-7 antitank grenade launchers, Katyusha 170-millimeter rockets, wire mines, plastic mines, bicycle bombs, sniper rifles, ammunition for all of the above, and frequency-hopping radios and burst transmitters so these guys aren't so ******* easy to find.

More than 90% of Iranians are Shia Muslims apparently. So perhaps the Yanks feel that by ousting Assad (who is Shia, along with only 12% of Syrians), they can bring about a Sunni leadership in Syria and thus perhaps more dependable allies against Iran.

Just come back from holiday and this is not news I really wanted to hear.

One one hand we are banging on about extremism and on the other hand we are supporting terrorists with the same ideology in Syria. We should be supporting Asad and not the "rebels"!

This is not a sunni/shia thing as far as the west are concerned - Iraq is governed by "moderate" shias remember. The media makes out that the west are right and that Iran is wrong but anybody with half a brain cell will know that is a lie.

America is dying to topple Syria to break the axis of Iran-Hezbollah which is the only force able to defend itself against Israeli terror - that's the way I see it at least. Currently there is a balance between Lebanon/Israel where neither will start a battle with the other, the US is trying to tip it in Israel's favour.
